Michael Lumagbas talks about his experience with crab fishing and providing for his family

The story focuses on two women fish vendors (Ms. Concordia Gayoso and Ms. Rowena Sawaan) of more than 30 years at the Guiuan Public Market. Their livelihood is threatened by the continuous decrease in fish supply, decreasing variety of species and sizes. Abrupt weather change was identified as one of the main reasons for the low fish supply in the market. The increasing price from middlemen was also highlighted by the vendors as this requires them to have bigger capital. Video and interview provided by Guiuan Development Foundation Inc. (GDFI). As GDFI celebrates its 34th Founding Anniversary, a giant clan resource enhancement activity was conducted on August 31, 2022. GDFI in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, released 100 giant clams (Tridacna derasa) in Canigaran Fish and Marine Sanctuary, Salcedo, Eastern Samar. Bantay Dagat and LGU representatives attended and helped in the seeding activity. This is just one of the 4 sanctuaries included in the giant clam dispersal during GDFI’s anniversary celebration. A total of 500 clams were released in the Municipalities of Guiuan, Salcedo, and Quinapondan.
